Introduction

Take Honeywell’s OptimusS and put it in your pocket – it doesn't matter where you need to use it, its portability helps you collect data and bar codes anywhere you require. This smart scan terminal combines comfort in operation with easy programming. Its spray-proof, ergonomic and sturdy housing accommodates a laser scanner, a keyboard, an IrDA interface and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

This powerful laser scanner reads all commercial bar codes from a distance of 2-22 cm. Its high scan rate of 100 scans per second make it possible to read even badly printed, uneven or dirty bar codes in only fractions of a second without even the slightest problem. Most of the spray-proof rubber keyboard with 21 keys is programmable, so that custom-tailored function sets can be used. With the keyboard, users can easily input data (numbers and letters), navigate through menus and confirm system dialogues. In order to make reading possible in even the worst lit places, its large, graphical display is provided with a backlight function. The device features a maximum screen size of 8x20 characters (100x64 pixels). Its housing is robust enough that even drops from 1.2 metres onto concrete do not effect the device.

After scanning all required data, the user simpley places the Optimus back into its charging station. All acquired data will then be directly transferred over the USB or serial interface to the host computer. Optionally, data can be transferred wirelessly to any IrDA compatible device (e.g. notebooks, PDAs, mobiles, etc.).

Depending on the complexity of the required applications, device-specific programmes can be developed with Honeywell’s graphical Optimizer Software or directly under C++. Honeywell provides both programming software and libraries free of charge. With Honeywell’s Optimizer Software, even unexperienced users can programme applications easily. If customer-specific applications are required, the device can be programmed freely under C++ – offering the highest flexibility if sufficient programming experience is available. Older ScanPal programmes can be converted automatically into ­OptimusS compatible versions with a free software tool.

As the OptimusS is equipped with a 16 bit CMOS processor and 2MB RAM, even complicated applications can be used at adequate speed. This also makes the OptimusS an excellent choice for large data sets or complex programmes. The integrated rechargeable lithium-ion battery has a capacity of up to 100 hours of operating time, and features intelligent charging electronics that help charge the device automatically once it reconnects to the cradle.
