Introduction

Possible applications for the Symbol CS1504 are only limited by the size of its internal memory. Examples include distribution of the device together with catalogues or order lists at trade shows. Customers simply scan the bar code next to the item they want to order or for which they want to receive additional information. Do-it-yourself and furniture centres allow their customers to scan the products they are interested in and for which they want further consulting. Naturally, the CS1504 is also suitable for stocktaking applications. Even simple solutions for mobile catering orders and delivery are much easier with this device. Another possibility is online shops and delivery services where customers scan EAN codes of required products in supermarkets, at home or in catalogues and order directly from their own PC. Security firms supply their staff with these devices and label objects, which are to be monitored, with specific bar codes. Patrol routes and time planning can then be tracked easily and possibly corrected, or used to show their customerts which object was checked and at what time.

The CS1504 is equipped with an integrated high-performance laser scanner that helps even inexperienced users scan bar codes fast and easily. Its Fuzzy-Logic technology enables it to read badly printed and dirty 1D bar codes (very common in industrial environments) quickly and precisely. A large scan button at the upper side of the device triggers the scan. Users simply have to aim at the bar code and press the button. Scanned codes can be deleted as well. The minus key deletes the last scanned code instantly. To avoid unintentional deletion, this key can also be disabled by software.

To programm the CS1504, Symbol provides a free software development kit. It can be used to control most aspects of the device’s behaviour. Without effort, your customers create their own functions, determine how the bar codes are stored and control all other functions of the device. As the data processing of bar codes is usually realised through customer-specific software applications, Symbol does not provide software for data transfer. Functions that access the serial port or the USB interface need to be implemented in the used software solution. A description of protocols and communication commands is naturally available free of charge.

Besides internal memory and connectivity interfaces, the device is equipped with an integrated real-time clock. The device can be configured to save a time-stamp with every collected bar code. This helps to attain even better results when analysing user data.

Extremely small dimensions make the CS1504 highly portable – a device that accompanies you wherever you go. A corresponding eyelet on the top surface of the device and a weight of merely 35 grams, including batteries, make the device the perfect keychain or pendant – users will not even notice it.
