Introduction

The LS4278 robust wireless scanner from Symbol is an always-reliable solution for bar code scanning with a large radius. Even though it is a wireless scanner, it comes at a very reasonable price. Users can stand up to fifteen metres away from the cradle, giving it a significantly larger operating range. Such flexibility allows POS staff to scan bulky objects from all sides or examine items thoroughly. Nursing staff can verify directly at the sickbed that patients receive the correct medication. For shipping and receivin, users scan itemise, serial or tracking numbers directly from the pallets without messing with cables. Naturally, this increases productivity as well as sales while reducing the occurrence of injuries.

The integrated WPAN function makes it possible: using a Bluetooth connection (class 2 v1.2) data is transmitted wirelessly and reliably. Authentication is integrated as well to make sure that the data goes to the correct host. Additionally, selective frequency spread ensures error-free operation within the range of 802.11 networks.

The LS4278 offers exceptionally reliable performance for scanning bar codes: the scanner reads from any angle thanks to its innovative multi-line scan raster that makes aiming at the bar code obsolete. At the same time, the scanner reads all commercial 1D bar codes from a distance of up to 70 cm (depending on the bar code size and type). Additionally, the scan line moves vertically up and down in order to successfully scan composite bar codes or labels with torn, badly printed or exceptionally tiny bar codes. This function also has the effect of making the scanner very tolerant to movements, so that users do not have to hold the scanner still during the scanning process. This makes scanning more intuitive and further increases productivity.

The LS4278 scanner and charging station were especially designed for demanding conditions where the scanner is used very frequently. The devices are resistant against impacts and splashes of water, which guarantees your customer maximum operability and a safe investment. The charger is equipped with drainage channels that protect its electronic parts from damage caused by spilt liquids. Unintentional drops do not interrupt operation, as the scanner is impact-resistant against drops from a height of 1.5 m. A patented design with a single circuit board prevents problems that usually occur with several interconnected boards and thus eliminates one of the most frequent causes of failure. The charging contact of both the scanner and the charger are suitable for industry applications and resistant against wear – a combination that allows for hundreds of thousands of charging cycles. Usually, contacts of comparable chargers last no longer than 5,000 to 10,000 charging cycles. Particularly interesting: The LS4278 liquid polymer scan engine comes with a lifetime warranty.

The integrated rechargeable battery offers sufficient power for more than 32,000 scanning cycles. In other words, it can provide operation for several days. Charging a fully discharged battery never takes more than three hours, but in most cases one hour is sufficient. The included NiMH guarantees long-term use and is reliable even after many years of operation.

The device is easily integrated into existing Bluetooth networks (Class 2 v1.2) or by using the Bluetooth cradle with multi-interface: depending on your customer’s system, the scanner is connected either to a serial, a USB or keyboard wedge interface. Alternatively, it can be connected to special industry and POS interfaces of various manufacturers using an optional cable. The scanner is available in light grey and anthracite.
